Dear Mary,

I have an old book called "Rhodesian Genesis" by Neville Jones which lists a
Hugh Earle Welby as an 1895 Pioneer of Rhodesia. I presume this would be
your Edward Earle Welby - wonder why he was named Hugh? There is a very
detailed account of the Matabele Wars, including the Allan Wilson patrol
which was massacred, but no specific mention of Hugh/Edward.

A lot has been written on the Shangani patrol and Allan Wilson's last stand
and I am sure someone else on the list will give you further information. I
would love to offer you photocopies of the chapter from Rhodesian Genesis,
but I would be breaking copyright, so hope you can obtain a copy some other
way.

Kind regards,
Dale Mathieson
