I should love to join the Afrikaans forum but I simply do not understand the
language - I wish I did.

I agree with Andre and Christo. Those of us who have mastered both
languages are the richer for being able to partake in both lists. The
"other" list is devoid of flare-up's and all members benefit, as no
time is wasted by unnecessary altercations and the flow of information
is undisturbed by ugly incidents. Is this because one is invited to
join? Possibly. As an invited guest you behave towards other invited
members in a courteous manner. As it should be.

Rows such as the one that flared up recently only serves to widen the
gap between the language groups - a gap many of us who live inside the
country would like to see closed. We are all interested in the
genealogy of South Africans, whatever language they chose to speak. I
wonder if anybody noticed that early Cape information is not as
abundant as it used to be? Three guesses as to where it went!

It is the lot of the emigrant to have precious little say about how
things are run in his or her country of birth or in the new country,
for that matter. The right to criticise, demand or patronise is given
up of one's own free will. This is something learned by painful
experience rather than from the glossy brochures!
