Middelburg (note spelling) is about 80 miles east of Pretoria and
Johannesburg, about 20 miles east of the now bigger town of Witbank, which was
only founded in 1890. The town was founded in 1866 as Nazareth, and renamed
Middelburg in 1874.
I do not believe (though I may be wrong) that there was any system of Civil
Registration at that time. So, you will not be able to get a birth
certificate. (Civil records, if they exist, will be at the Archives in
Pretoria.)
One source will be Church Registers, though I would think there were none
other than a Dutch Reformed Church in the town at that time. This (1888) was
only a few years after the discovery of gold in Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton
(to the east) and then Johannesburg (to the west). I know of no reason why
Middelburg would have had a non-Boer population large enough to establish
their own Church.
I did not find any references to the people you are seeking in either SA
Genealogies or de Villiers / Pama.
Best wishes
Keith

Hi listers,
I wish to obtain a birth certificate for my grandmother, Jessie Laura Mary
Beevor REID who was born 14 September 1888, in Middleburg Transvaal. She
married Charles Tweedy LARDNER-BURKE on 2nd November 1912 at the Holy Trinity
Church, Middleburg.
Can someone please tell me where Middleburg is and can I obtain abirth
certificate from there, or do I have to go elsewhere. Were the names of the
parents of those getting married recorded on any documents, and will I be able
to obtain them??
I have only brief information regarding Jessie's mother, Julia REID, nee
BEEVOR, and none about her natural father. Can anyone help?
ANY help or direction will be greatfully received.
TIA
Wendy Stovell (New Zealand)
