Mr. JA Semmelink
I offered my services in helping with the transcription of the death notice
index
records but have not heard from you.Possibly my message got lost.
I have the following equipment at my disposal.
1. Compac Presario laptop
2. Logitec Scanner - portable with removable scan-head.
3. Digital Sony camera
I am retired and have time at my disposal although I am working virtually
fulltime on the family trees I am researching!
Lastly, I stay in Bellville, close enough to the archives & masters offices!
The only drawback is the 1-finger typing!

Subject: Death Notice Index Records - Update 2/11/2000
We have come to a major challenge with the transcription of the Death Notice
Indexes. We started off with the first volume at the Master's Office which
runs from October 1950 to the end of 1951.
It turns out that it so big and heavy that it needs a relatively strong
person to work with it. Lorna White has suggested we make a stand for it
which will help with that aspect. The second problem is that it is so big
that one actually has to move physically over to one corner of the page to
see what is written there before typing it in the computer. In addition it
could take quite a few months for one person to capture everything.
I looked at microfilms of such large volumes. The Microfilm reader that I
have available prints each page of such large volumes out to four pages
which will make printing extremely expensive. I am now looking for a film
printer which will be able to reduce these pages to one A4 size page each.
This will enable many people to work on one volume at a time.
We have now been asked to also capture the Death Notice Indices held at the
Archives. There is no possibility for us to remove those registers which
are also very big. People will have to either work at the archives or work
from microfilms or get printouts and work from them. We are extremely eager
to capture the Cape Death Notice indexes from 1936 to 1950 which are held at
the Archives in Cape Town. All the other provinces have been completed for
that time. The printers available to us also print the microfilms of these
volumes out to four pages per page of the original. I would really
appreciate any solutions anyone might have. If we could get any volunteers
who can go to the archives in Cape Town, I will make a computer available
there.
Some positive news. I have experimented with scanning the typed registers
which exist from 1980 to 1989. I got pretty acceptable results and will try
to do a complete volume this coming week. If the results are positive enough
I will do them all.
I am now looking for a hand scanner with which I could scan the big volumes
in so many people could be sent copies of the pages to help enter wherever
they might be. If anyone could give me any information on hand scanners I
would be extremely grateful.
If anyone could get to a Family History Centre and could input even a few
pages from microfilm or from printouts from the microfilm it will help the
project a great deal. Please let me know and I will let you know which
pages we need.
