The HSRC is still in business, and recently published the second volume of
"New Dictionary of SA Biography." Look at http://www.hsrc.ac.za/ (which is
painfully slow). They have a library, presumably in Pretoria.
GISA took over some of the "assets" of the HSRC, specifically the genealogy
collection. They also seem to have rights to some books originally published
by the HSRC - see http://www.sun.ac.za/gisa/pryslys.htm
Your best bet is to try to find a library with a copy of the book you are
seeking. Also, look at Conrod Mercer's site: You may find someone who has
the book and is prepared to do lookups.
Best wishes

Someone else help here, please, but didn't GISA take over the role of the
now defunct HSRC? I may have caught the short end of the stick (as usual!)
I'm also desperate for a copy of this book. The Parktown FHC doesn't seem to
have a copy (at least not today).
While I was at the FHC today I DID notice a volume entitled "Children's
Friend Society" (an A4 hardcover book, not a commercially published book)
but didn't think to look at it. Thanks for the tip.
