It may simply be a misspelling. I found a number of them when I consulted
registers from that time: Johannis instead of Johannes, for instance.

niece my mother called Lillian E Harding was actually baptised as
Lilyan Elizabeth Harding in Capetown on 27-3-1878. Knowing
the possible overseas source of this spelling or variation may
just help get further back.
