Hi Ivy

I have now finished Burchell (it really is a slim volume but most
instructive) & found in the Notes that Zwartland became Malmesbury in 1829.
Burchell visited the hot baths near what became Caledon -- he called them
the Zwarteberg Baths -- the similarity could cause confusion. I grew up in
the area known as the Sandveld north of Malmesbury, & the region around
Malmesbury is still known as the Swartland.

Some other interesting snippets are that Durbanville was formerly known as
Pampoenkraal & that one should take care with references to Vischer's-hoek
or Fish-hoek, because the name was previously used for both today's Fishhoek
& Gordon's Bay. In the notes, the editor H Clement Notcutt says "this name
was used for the north-east corner of False Bay until a few years ago [he
was writing in 1935], but has now given place to Gordon's Bay. Both names
appear on a map of 1780, but for two different bays near together."

Reading Burchell has been so stimulating, I'm now going to tackle Jane
Meiring's The Truth in Masquerade. The Adventures of Francois le Vaillant,
who travelled through various parts some 30 years earlier than Burchell,
although it would seem le Vaillant was not as honest or modest a character
as Burchell!

There are two references to Brandt in Dictionary of South African Biography,
but neither can be yours. I'll keep a lookout for references.

Kind regards
Maureen Brady
