The SA Snyman family descends from Christoffel Snyman who married (about 1690)
Marguerite de Savoye from France.

Christoffel's mother was "Groote Catrijn", a freed slave from Paliacatta in
Bengal. Her life has (and is) being researched by Mansell Upham, and some
details have been published in "Capensis".

Other references to this family are "Groep Sonder Grense" by Hans F. Heese,
"Slaves and Free Blacks at the Cape 1658-1700" by Anna J. Boeseken, and
"Children of Bondage" by Robert C.-H. Shell.

You can also search the archives of the South-Africa list at

http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl

The list name is South-Africa (with the hyphen), and a search for "Snyman",
"Snijman", "Mansell", etc. should turn up the information I am referring to.

Best wishes
