Subject: death in Kimberley 1885

The death of John RALSTON is recorded on his family's
>gravestone in what is now Dumfries in Scotland. It says he died in
>Kimberley on 10 August 1885. I am, at present, assuming Kimberley in South
Africa.

I have never looked for information in South Africa and
really don't have clue where to start. I don't know what he was doing there
- is it about the right time for gold? I know it is too early for the Boer
War. I am sorry that my knowledge of South African history is quite poor.
Can anybody help me at all?
