Dear Keith,

For details, you'd probably need the PRO, but you could try the Royal
Highlanders = Black Watch Regimental Museum at:
Balhousie Castle
Perth (on the North Inch)
PH1 5HS
SCOTLAND

Beyond that, I can report that Regt No 6442 Pte Powrie (likely to be your J.
Powrie) was in the 2nd Battalion, Black Watch. If he died of wounds, he was
probably buried initially at Modder River, to which the British fell back
after the Magersfontein defeat. In the early 1960s all British casualties
were exhumed by the War Graves Board and reinterred in the West End Garden
of Remembrance in Kimberley (West End GR), where a single central memorial
lists names by regiment (thus no detailed individual inscription). His name
might also feature on monuments at Magersfontein or Modder River (will come
back to you on this).

The regimental history to hand is a fairly general one, so detail on members
other than officers is sparse. Best bet to further the enquiry might well be
through PRO or the Regimental Museum.

Information by kind services of Ms Fiona Barbour, Research Associate,
McGregor Museum

All good wishes
David Morris
