This cannot be "Tarkastad", as the town was initiated in 1862.
Portions of the farms Schaapkraal and Boschfontein were bought
for the purpose of establishing the new town, which was proclaimed
on 29 July 1864. Prior to this, the Tarka district was administered
(in a loose sense of the word!) from Cradock.

Therefore, if Tarkastad is intended in the account, that particular
trek must have been at a much later date.

with best wishes
