The link below will take you to a scan of the proclamation announcing Willem
Cornelis van Ryneveld as Commissioner of the Court of Requests for Slaves
for the District of Graaff Reinet in July 1834, a month before the abolition
of slavery in British colonies. I hope this will be of interest to some van
Ryneveld researcher.
For anyone researching early 19th century families in Graaff Reinet, please
keep an eye out for a fascinating document that I will be scanning over the
next week. It details the insolvency proceedings against Michiel Combrink in
Graaff Reinet in 1817, and includes a schedule of the disposal of his
estate -- mostly furniture and livestock. Names mentioned in the document
include de Beer, Labuschagné, du Preez, Olivier, Botma, Booyzen, Kotze and
de Klerk. Of course I will let the list know as soon as I have put the
document up for viewing.
