Two fairly recent histories of SA are:
"A history of South Africa", Leonard Thompson (1990)
"A concise history of South Africa", Robert Ross (1999)
An authoritative book on slavery in South Africa is:
"Children of bondage", Robert Shell (1994).
An interesting book on why South African society is what it is, is by Nigel
Worden: "The making of modern South Africa", (1994).
All of these books are relevant to your questions. If you are trying to
explain Baragwanath (hospital), the need for labour on the mines and the
evolution of what became apartheid, 1890-1948, is probably most relevant.
The earlier Cape society, slavery, and the Great Trek had little to do with
how SA society evolved as a result of the discoveries of diamonds at Kimberley
and gold on the Witwatersrand.
Best wishes

Hi everyone,
I have again been lurking, while I write a book on my time as a surgeon
at Baragwanath hospital. I need help, possibly from Kammie or anyone else out
there. I am doing a SA background/sociology chapter right now and need to
know more about what happened to the Khoisan peoples. What are the correct
spellings? Is it Koi, Khoi, Koi Koi or Khoikhoi, or none of the above? How
did they get into slavery, and what proportion did so. Kammie's website has
two tables, from Bradlow and Mahida, neither of which is specific at all on
this point. (Possibly 0.77% of slaves??)
It is also my understanding that not many Bantu South Africans were
actually in slavery, since the Burghers met up with them later in history,
when slavery was on its way out. I do know that the issue of slavery was a
major reason for the start of the Great Trek. 1834:Slavery abolished in
British Colonies. 1836: Great Trek started.
I would be grateful for any help.
