Hi listers, my g mother and her sister were Bells, who married Crofton
brothers. My g mother Annie Elizabeth Bell, called Cissie, was the second
daughter of Charles and Janet, nee Wilkinson, Bell. According to my
information the Bell family went to South Africa in 1892 from Lancashire.
They returned to England in 1895 and then went back to South Africa to live
in 1902. It seems that Annie and her sister Ethel somehow met the Crofton
men. Both Arthur and his brother Wilfred went to South Africa to fight in
the Boer War in 1900/1901.
I don't think I am related to the Natal Bells because the Bell family
settled in Johannesburg. My mother, however, was born at Newlands in Cape
Town in 1927, which suggests they lived in the Cape for a while. Whilst I
could probably ask my mother some of these questions, I was hoping some
lister might be able to help me connect with South African Bells. I have to
rely on snail mail from my mother and she finds it hard writing. The phone
as everyone knows is very expensive and then there is the matter of trying
to remember the answers to the questions in between being brought up-to-date
on current issues.
Thanks in advance.
Merry Xmas.
