Thanks for the info Brian.

The books I have found so far tend to do some on early history and most
on modern SA history. I am looking for something that covers the 1600's
to the very early 1900's more in depth, so I will see if I can find this
one you refer to.

Regards

Tanya

The Readers Digest published the "Illustrated History of South Africa -
The Real
Story" which I bought in 1999 for R150. Whether it falls into your
category of
"a good historical overview " I don't know but I find it fills my needs.
It is
over 500 pages, fairly comprehensive and is well illustrated. I am not
familiar
with Davenport so cannot comment on how it compares. It has 4 references
to
Adriaan van Jaarsveld.
