There also used to be a John Orr's in Wynberg and Claremont in Cape Town in
the Sixties - my mother used to buy us clothes there. I think they were more
expensive than Woolworths !!

Sorry to hear of John Orr's demise, it was an institution, in Natal also.

A friend of mine when living in Pietermaritzburg was in John Orr's one day
with her little girl, to whom she had just confided that she was pregnant
(though not visibly so). She was mortified when the child suddenly
announced to the world at large, and the fashionable clientele of John
Orr's in particular, in the piercing tones of the very young: "My Mummy's
going to have a baby!" She had a real struggle to pretend that there was
no connection between them.

This was in the late fifties -- how things have changed since then!
