Hi Mark
South African College (SACS) High School and Preparatory School for Boys
in Cape Town. Oldest
institution of its kind in SA. Founded in 1829 as 'Het Zuid Afrikaansch
Atheneum" to provide both
ordinary and higher education for Colonists. Maintained degree classes
after establishment of
University of Cape of Good Hope in 1873, which were gradually separated from
the S A College and
ultimately merged into the University of Cape Town, established in 1918.
The original establishment
became South African College High School and continued to occupy the old
buildings in the Cape
Town suburb of the Gardens. There it remained until 1955, when the first of
a large new series of
buildings in Newlands was occupied. (Encyclopaedia of SA by Rosenthal)
I also have 'They were South Africans" which devotes a chapter to SA's first
college - it seems we
have a great deal to thank the Scottish for - The Rev. Dr James Adamson, &
John Fairbairn were the
founders and others like James Rose Innes, Sir Langham Dale,Rev. John Pears
(Pearston named after)
to name but a few
Kind regards
Lynn MacLeod

the "South African College" in Cape Town around the year 1835. I have a
death notice which states that the 20 year old subject was a "Student of the
South African College" when he died in April 1835. Does anyone know anything
of this institution, it's history, where it was situated and for what
academic purpose?
