MMMMM guess what. this is one of the far too many 'old' books without an
index. But lucky for you this is one that I have made an index for. Page 107
"the South African College of Music, founded in Cape Town in 1909 had grown
so rapidly that in a decade its roll of students had grown ten-fold in spite
of the raising of the entrance qualification. Its exiguous grant from the
Province, on the other hand, had remained obstinately stationary and forbade
the over-worked staff to look forward to any relief. The University had
ground in common with the College in that one or two of its members were on
its Council and it, like the College was training teachers, often the same
teachers. The two institutions began to draw together and, to cut a long
story short, W.H.Bell director of the College took charge of Music as a
first B.A course at the University in 1920. What though the Government
declined to recognise him as a professor till the following year, the
University made provision for a second course and promised to pay the salary
of a full time assistant in 1922. Axes might fall, but the Faculty of Music
was a reality in all but name"
It's lovely writing!
