Hi Listers
I have just received an email from the Pretoria Archives telling me that
they can no longer pull files and reserve them in advance of anyone coming
to the Archives. They are short staffed and because of the many 'land
claims' the rules that now apply are that each person may only request 6
files at any given time. These will queue and be pulled as and when they can
do them - remember they have 68 vaults on 5 different floors and 1 person
doing the pulling!! When you have finished your files you may order another
6 but it will depend on how many people are making use of the Archives, tea
and lunch breaks etc as to when you will get your files! I have already
experienced waiting for 2 hours and more for 5 files!
Using my camera I usually can do 6 files in 30 minutes! So to all those
people who have asked for lookups, I am not sure when and if these will get
done. I sent them through a list of approximately 50 files at the beginning
of last week and when I phoned I was told they hadn't been pulled yet, so I
didn't go. I then requested that they be ready for me on Tuesday next week
and received an email with the new rules. As some of you know, I live in
Johannesburg and it becomes quite expensive travelling to Pretoria
especially if I am not able to do all the lookups in a day. I am going to go
on Tuesday and just see what happens but thought I had best let you know via
the list.
Kind regards
Tessa
