Thank you very much for your help, this time we did get into the site and
tried out some names. Sorry to say that none of the people we're looking
for turned up.
Someone told me a story about South African archives: the hippo's ears
represent the indexes and what we can retrieve through NAAIRS, and the
hippo's body is the rest of the Archive material - we are only looking at a
very small proportion of what is actually there. The PRO is probably the
same, my men may well be on the muster rolls, pay rolls etc, but do not
have personal files that can be readily accessed.
At least now I won't be wasting anyone's precious time trying to do
impossible look ups on my behalf. It's back to the drawing board, looking
for other routes to the information.
