Hi Sharon
This is another belated reply.
Your point 3 gives the parents of Millicent Sarah PALMER as George PALMER
and Millicent RECKLESS. These are actually her grandparents not her parents.
Her father was Benjamin Reckless PALMER and her mother was Mary Ann HARTLEY
and they were married at St. John's Anglican Church, Bathurst on 3 February
1833. Millicent was born on 4 February 1832 and died 29 May 1878. She and
John MILES were married on the 19th Feb 1851 at St. John's Anglican Church.
Her mother, Mary Ann HARTLEY was married to James McPHAIL on 15 June 1823.
Her second marriage was to Benjamin and her third marriage was to Thomas
PAGE on 2 February 1847.
Millicent and John MILES had 13 children, amongst whom was John Clement
MILES born 14 July 1853, died 23 July 1942 and buried at Hilton Cemetery,
Cathcart.
Robert MILES came from Erlestoke, Wiltshire according to the M D Nash's "The
Settler Handbook" Pg 72. He was a late addition to the Ford party who was
from Deverill Longbridge, Wiltshire. You possibly have more accurate info if
you are working with Frome researchers. Please could you confirm their place
of birth if you have this info.
Hope this helps
Take care
Tessa

Hi Becky and other Miles researchers,
Thanks for the extra bits on these.
Just a few details I want to make sure of:
1. I have death date for William MILES as 1885 as opposed to 1855; perhaps
there is a typo somewhere?
2. Clem MILES: I have his full name as John Clement MILES.
3. John MILES: his first wife was Millicent Sarah PALMER (d.o. 1820 settler
George PALMER and Millicent RECKLESS) whom he married 1851. His second wife
was Mary Ann EDWARDS (nee KING), and I have John Clement as their child.
However, I have no dates, so it is possible that he was Millicent's child.
Another interesting point re the MILES intermarriages is that it wasn't a
purely South African phenomenon. The Mileses, Dickses, Fords and Ralphs, all
of whom came out in Edward Ford's party on the Weymouth were related. They
were all from Deverill Longbridge near Frome in Somerset. Edward and Jane
FORD's daughters Maria and Dinah married brothers Benjamin and James DICKS.
(Only James came to SA). The two RALPH men in the party were referred to by
Joseph DICKS (s.o. James DICKS, not the one previously mentioned) as uncles,
so it is possible that their mother was a RALPH, though I haven't proved
this. And Robert MILES was married to Ann DICKS. I haven't worked out how
they all fit together, but I'm working on it, with the help of Frome
researchers.
As an aside, I was at school in Queenstown with MILES, DICKS, RALPH,
HARTLEY, McPHAIL and BROWN children, and they all seemed perfectly normal to
me. But then I suppose they'd say the same about me!
The MILESes and BROWNs in particular were mostly all brilliant at sport, and
Ray HARTLEY was brilliant academically speaking, if a little eccentric. He
is now a well-known political commentator for Sunday Times.
