G'day Andrew,

It has happened in Zambia also. I was born in Chingola, Northern Rhodesia (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth according to my kids) and have given up trying to get a copy of my birth certificate. The originals were lost in a home fire 4 years ago and after spending nearly $1000 in various attempts since then, have given up trying to get a copy. Sadly, my parents did not register my birth at the British Consul (father British, mother SA).

Warmest regards,

As my parents had no intention of remaining in Zimbabwe,
I expect they would have taken the precaution of obtaining several
copies of the certificate (as I did with my marriage certificate because
I was about to leave SA, and I also got birth extracts for purposes of
taking out life assurance) just in case the administrative balloon went
up and they became unobtainable. This has probably happened already for
Zimbabwe -- who knows what might happen in SA?
