Hi Guys and Dolls,
I recently received two BIG jpg files of the "linen Family Tree" compiled by
The Ulster King of all Ireland in 1848, and have added them to my website
at:
http://www.tantrem.com/Settlers/stretch_family_tree.htm
if you would like to see them. More details on the web page. Hope you have
good eyesight, a magnifying glass, and are able to read 1848 handwriting!!
Enjoy

There is quite a bit of information on the Devenish and Stretch (Stritch in
Ireland) families in the book "Historical and Genealogical Records of the
Devenish Families of England and Ireland," written by Robert J. Devenish and
published in the U.S. in 1948. He has a whole chapter on the South African
family. He cites a pedigree prepared by the Ulster King of Arms in 1848
that states that Catherine Devenish Stritch was the daughter of John
Devenish of Meares-Court. He goes on to make a case for Ellen
Stritch/Stretch and John Meares Devenish being first cousins, both
grandchildren of John Devenish of Portlick Castle and Meares-Court. Meares
Court was inherited by an uncle of John Meares Devenish, who hyphenated his
family's surname as Devenish-Meares.
St. Leger and Lennox are extremely common middle names through the extended
Devenish family. There is quite a bit in the book I mentioned above about
the descendants of John Meares Devenish, the original immigrant to South
Africa. The line I am particularly interested in is through his son, James
Goldsbury Devenish, who married (1) Anna Leonora DE BEER, and (2) Elizabeth
Francina KEULER. The line then continues through James and Elizabeth's son,
Jacobus Johannes (James John) Devenish, who married Christina Petronella
PFAFF in Riversdale in 1881.

Hi Sharon
Contact Margaret HUMPHRIES who is also doing research on STRETCH. The last
email address I have for her is
This is Margaret's research breakdown -
Richard Alworth STRETCH, b.o. Capt. Charles Lennox STRETCH.
Only two brothers in the family.
Charles only had one child who died in infancy.
James St. Ledger STRETCH X Catherine DEVENISH
All of their children came out to South Africa.
Catherine herself also came out to South Africa after the death of James.
Children -
Ellen St. Ledger STRETCH
Richard Alworth STRETCH
Catherine STRETCH X GEORGE Bennett (this is Margaret's line of research)
Susan STRETCH
Charles Lennox STRETCH (Capt)
Good luck!
Best wishes
Becky
