Jack the baboon was a signalman on the railway line in Uitenhage. A short
version of his story is in "The Plains of Camdeboo" by Eve Palmer, Pp. 174-7.
It does not mention the army.
The story is also told by Lawrence Green in one of his books - I think it was
"Karoo". There was also some discussion on the list a couple of years ago.
