I would not assume that jewellers would be concentrated in
Johannesburg -- I well recall when I was a youngster in Cape Town that
there was a long-established jeweller in Adderley Street (on the right
going up the hill, on the corner of either Longmarket or Shortmarket
Street) where there was a little old guy seated at a desk in the corner
window, loup to his eye, crouched down over a cutting wheel putting
facets on diamonds. To my young eyes he looked as though he had been
there for 50 years or so, and maybe he and his predecessors collectively
had been there for longer than that.
