Hi Tracy,
There is a Van Ryns Cellar making brandy in Stellenbosch (spelt without
the "h"). Here is something about them from their web site:

Van Ryn's
Van Ryn's Brandy - a touch of class. Potstill content is guaranteed to
be 10 years old.
Van Ryn Cabinet Brandy is available in 10 Year Old, 12 Year Old, 15 Year
Old and 20 Year Old variants.
Van Ryn's Brandy has a home in the Van Ryn Brandy Cellar, which adds to
its origin and heritage. In the heart of the Vlottenburg Valley, where
the Eerste River winds its way through the tranquil landscape, lies the
legendary Van Ryn Brandy Cellar. The rich history of this cellar dates
back to 1845, when the Dutch immigrant, Jan van Ryn, arrived at the
Cape. He established the Van Ryn Wine and Brandy Company, and with it a
proud tradition of brandy excellence.
True to its founder's belief that the secret of a great brandy lies in
the maturation, the cornerstone of the Van Ryn Brandy Cellar philosophy
is "Excellence Maturation". Here the age-old skill of the cooper,
preserved for posterity, still forms an integral part of brandy
maturation in wood. Much care is afforded to maintain optimum maturation
conditions in the cellar.
When Jan van Ryn established the Van Ryn Wine & Brandy Company in 1845,
he knew that every year some 3% of his maturing brandy would be lost
through evaporation. Yet, he lovingly referred to this loss as "The
Share of The Angels", as this was the angels' reward for transforming
the young brandy into liquid gold.
Some 50 years on, a nearby farmer who delivered his quality wine for
brandy making at the Van Ryn Cellar, also stored his fresh cream there.
As luck would have it, one of the cream containers was not airtight.
Overnight, evaporating brandy permeated the cold fresh cream in the
container. And so, Angels' Share was born - launched in July 1999.
Regards,
Solvej

Hi list
Have just received death notice of Jores RIP, he was born in Holland and
died in 1910 in Cape Town at the age of 82. His occupation was given as
"Distiller at V. Rhyns" (retired). Does anyone have any idea where this
could be?
Thanks
Tracy
