Ray, it's interesting that you asked about Brabant. I've been going through some notes I made in the Cape Archives and there is an entry that reads "Memorial received. G. BRABANT for Joseph HICKMAN" (1888). My notes are rather sketchy but Joseph HICKMAN, late lieutenant of the First Regiment of the Cape Mounted Yeomanry, was petitioning for a pension owing to his having lost his eyesight "after exposure and hardship in the field" in the Basuto war.

Have also just found this in NAAIRS:

DEPOT KAB
SOURCE T
TYPE LEER
VOLUME_NO 837
SYSTEM 01
REFERENCE 3199
PART 1
DESCRIPTION PENSION MAJOR-GENERAL SIR EDWARD TEWD BRABANT, COMMANDANT-GENERAL
CAPE COLONIAL FORCES.
STARTING 1904
ENDING 1904

Best wishes

Jill Martin

Good evening fellow list members,
I was wondering if some
of the military buff's out there could provide me with some details of a
colonial unit called " Brabant's Horse". Were these men recruited from any
one area, say for instance the Eastern Cape or Border areas? The name
Brabant is one that I remember as there was a street in East London that was
called Brabant street. I presume named after the said gentleman. Just who
was he?
Do lists of the enlisted men in this unit exist somewhere? I have reason to
believe that some of my Ridgard ancestors were volunteers in this unit and I
want to try and find out any details of just where they enlisted and, if
possible, their service records.
Kindest regards,
Ray Pitt
