Operation Protea was started on 23 August 1981. It ended in September.
The objective was to destroy SWAPO's command and training center at
Xangongo and to destroy its logistic bases at Xangongo and Ongiva.
Wrt Katima, I recall that it was June 1978 that the SADF learnt that SWAPO
was preparing to attack the military bases at Katima Mulilo, Wenela and
Mapacha. The attack on Katima started on 23 August 1978 with a stand-off
bombardment using 122 mm rockets on Katima. One of these penetrated the
roof of a barrack killing 10 soldiers.
This might not be the incident you refer to.
