Many thanks to all who came to my help and posted solutions to the problem of sorting historical dates. I'm getting on fine now,
but would never have worked that out by myself.

One wonders why the boffins continue to add rings and things and buttons and bows to the computer programmes when they haven't
really resolved some of the very ordinary every day usages. And so many different suggestions have been made that one can only
presume that this is indeed a very common problem.
