I have not been following this thread, but there are 14 hits for NEWBATT in
the South African Archives:
Edward NEWBATT died 27-06-1875 age 34 and his wife Lucy Anne MAYNARD died
13-07-1875 age 24 are buried at St. Saviour's in Claremont, Cape Town.
Their estate papers are in the archives. It is no great stretch to imagine
that Alfred Edward Maynard NEUBATT (mentioned below) was their child. Why did
they die so young, and less than three weeks apart?
There are zero hits in the Archives for NEUBATT. I presume this spelling is
an error, at least so far as this family is concerned.
Best wishes,
Keith

NEUBATT would be a German spelling. There were a lot of German
immigrants to the Eastern Cape after the Crimean War (mid- to late
1850s, and mainly around East London, e.g. towns with German names such
as Berlin and Stutterheim, but by 1873 there is no reason why they would
not have spread to the Port Elizabeth area) and in the absence of a
handy Lutheran Church it is reasonable to suppose that the Anglican
Church would be a German's next choice -- similar Church polity and
liturgy. Is there any other indication of German ancestry?
