Topic: Family Associations
Our speakers involvement in genealogy and with family associations dates
back to 1998 when he was drawn into the organisation of the first Claassen
family gathering. Here he won his spurs and earned the right to address us
on the establishment and management of a family association. In his
presentation, Gert Claassen will include such elements as: Objectives,
establishment, structure and persona; Organisation, family festivals,
communication and publications; Projects, family crests, fundraising; and
Maintenance and preservation.

After he graduated in electrical engineering (cum laude) at the University
of Pretoria in 1971, Gert started his own mechanical and electrical
engineering consultancy. This was responsible for the design and
construction of a number of large commercial and industrial complexes,
including the TV complex of the SABC 1972-1976.
In 1978 he sold his practice and accepted the post of Manager: Urban
Development at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). In 1987 he
was appointed Group Managing Director of Technotron, a group of hi-tech
companies including the Laboratorium vir Gevorderde Ingenieurswese (LGI), a
hi-tech developer housed at the University of Pretoria. In 1991 he joined
the SABC as Chief Executive: Broadcast Centre and in 1995 he as promoted to
Chief Executive: Operations as well as the head of the new SABC satellite
initiative, ASTRASAT. During this time he established the International
Broadcasting Centre (IBC) for the 1994 elections, and also served as
Chairman of Rugby World Broadcasting.
Since his retirement from the SABC in June 1997, Gert has acted as
consultant and director for various companies. He serves on the Credit
Committee of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and undertakes
management consulting projects on behalf of the Corporation.
Besides his research and publication of Die Claas(s)en Afstammelinge in
Suid-Afrika, The Rubige Family Records, Die Dannhauser Familieregister,
and The Southey Family, Gert has also served on the National Executive
Committee of the GSSA.
