Subject: MOSENTHAL : recruitment from Germany

My late relative Henry BERGMANN(abt 1831-1866) joined
the MOSENTHAL Bros firm in South Africa in 1849, and
ran their branch in Aliwal North.

I am curious to know how the Mosenthal's recruited
their staff from Germany.

Did they advertise? Did they send agents back to
Germany to 'scout' out new recruits? How would someone
living in Germany in the 1850s have become aware that
this firm was looking for new people to work for them
in S. Africa?

Someone with access to the book on the Mosenthal firm,
written by Fleischer & Caccia ("Merchant Pioneers", or
smething similar is the title), may be able to supply
me with the answer to this question. Incidentally, if
someone has a copy of this book, which they wish to
sell, I would be a willing customer!
