Hello, Don,

I'd assume from your address that you are in the US, but I know with
ISPs like aol that is not necessarily so, so in case you are local,
here goes:

Files not yet transferred to the archives are still in the vaults of
the relative Master's Offices of the various divisions of the High
Court (formerly Supreme Court). I have no idea what the regulations
concerning these are, but I know from experience that if you simply
walk into the Cape Town office and look as though you know what you are
doing, you can get into the room where the index volumes are kept, look
up the estates you want and then go to the vaults and get them looked
out for you; you can then peruse them, make any necessary copies (take
your own paper) and hand them back. I had the advantage that in a
former incarnation I worked for a major bank's Trust Department, so I
did indeed know what I was doing, and so didn't have to ask directions,
even though the office had moved from Queen Victoria Street to the old
Revenue Office building since I had last been there (in 1961!) -- it
seemed adequately sign-posted, and nobody challenged me. But that was
in 2002, and security precautions may have been beefed up since then;
there were signs that such might be imminent even then.

If you are not located within reach of the office you want, perhaps
there is some kind soul on the List who can do as I did. (But not I --
as you can see I'm located in Australia.)
