I believe it was not so much that the next child 'inherited' the dead
child's name or was named after it, but that the name was probably an
important family name, like that of the grandfather, after whom the
eldest son was usually named, for instance, and if the child bearing
this name died, the next son born after that deat would often once
again be given the grandfather's names.
