I received the reports below from a fellow researcher and thought it may be
of interest to others on the list. They refer to a fire that destroyed the
Vine Hotel in Kimberley on 12th December 1874, then run by a Catherine Parr
who was a very redoubtable woman. Her daughter, also Catherine, married John
Thorburn, my distant cousin and a serious player in the history of the
period between 1870 and 1900 in SA and Swaziland.
