Hi all listers

Just wondering, the ancestor I am trying to trace, he came to South Africa
in about 1860 - 1863, having left the USA in 1858. On a petition dated
1905, he claims to be a naturalised British subject. How would one become a
naturalised British subject? Would he have become one simply through living
in South Africa under British law at the time? Or might it be possible he
left the US for Britain and became one that way before coming to South
