Subject: [SOUTH-AM-EMI-L] Re: Argentine Census of British immigrants (1)
Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 21:00:42 -0000
Thanks to the researching done by Maria in La Plata,
Argentina, it is
proposed to post on the List the names of immigrants from
Britain
that feature on the 1869 or 1895 Argentine Censuses.
Maria has sent the details to me and I have translated the
Spanish to English.
I have the original text if anyone would like to have it.
Alternatively
susbscribers can mail Maria direct at:
This is the first part of Maria submission:
1869 and 1895 Argentine Census Returns
Some observations:
1: The 1869 Census was taken by three separate people,
each working by their own criteria.
2: The number of older single people is noticeable, and
there
may be religious reasons for this. It was only later that
the laws
were passed that allowed civil marriage, and established the
Civil Registries.
3: It is very possible that the people, who are named as
illiterate,
were in fact only so in the sense that they did not
understand or
write Spanish. But the facts will never be established.
4: The way the surnames were recorded was undoubtedly
modified
in certain cases according to what the census-taker
understood.
There were also mistakes made when the original records were
further transcribed.
