Subject: [SOUTH-AM-EMI-L] CORREA or VIEIRA birth in Demarara, BG
Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 21:15:49 +0100
Hello!
I'm in Madrid, Spain, am of Anglo-Uruguayan stock,
and have joined this list recently.
The question of whether the surname is Vieira o Correa
could reflect the fact that the Portuguese and Brazilians,
and I imagine those of Madeira, use the mother's
surname (a matriarcal practice) rather than the father's.
In Angela's case the maternal surname seems to have
been Vieira. Living in Trinidad and attending English
schools there Angela was probably required to adjust
to the patriarcal practice of using the paternal surname,
which must have been Correa, and resumed doing
so when she went to Boston. While she was with
her husband de Andrade in Madeira, however, she
signed her surname as Vieira, according to the
matriarcal practice. Both Correa and Vieira
are surnames of Portuguese origin. Angela may be
described as "English" in the sense that the Spanish and
the Portuguese refer to all British people as "English".
Maybe Angela was of British nationality, and having
been brought up in British Guiana she must have
been a native English speaker, which would justify
the family legend that she was English. The first place
to look would be in the Government registry or church
records for Demerara,BG, circa 1885 when she seems
to have been born, to see if she or any brothers or
sisters were born or baptised there around that time
and the place of origin of her parents is mentioned
in the records.
Regards,
Tomas Miller
