Subject: [SOUTH-AM-EMI-L] British railway engineers in Argentina

Can anyone on this list help? My Great-Grandfather Charles Daniel was an engineer for ? railway in Argentina. He sailed there between 1884-1887 ( I am still waiting for a copy of my Grandfathers birth certificate to get the exact year), when the new baby Arthur Albert was born. It is believed that he was based at Bahia Blanca and that he was quite senior. He had his own Hacienda, with stables. His children attended the local Spanish school, not the English one and several of them died during the smallpox epidemic. Other than this I don't know anything about their life in Argentina and would dearly love to learn about how they lived. I have had so many problems trying to find somewhere where I can research this, partly because I don't speak Spanish. I can't even find evidence of the death's of his children at the moment.

Any help in setting me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Maria Smith nee DANIEL
