Marilda et all,

One reason why Jos Quintans was able to board the ship from France is ships
sailing along France and Spain in route to South America would call at ports
to pick up anybody going there; in other words, they'stop at French and
Spanish ports.
Now also it could have been that/they (Jos and family) were in France for
some reason and sailed from there. If another possibility is the port of Le
Havre, it's likely they resided at the Paris area (Just a thought)
Here's the address for Bordeaux http://abordeaux.ifrance.com/abordeaux/
The site's name is "Amitis genealogiques bordelaises". In French and
English. They have passports until 1850 to South America. Also a link with
Nantes, another emigrants port, which you can try.
The name Larrondo/a/e is Basque for sure, many went to Uruguay and
Argentina. I've some contacts in Uruguay that could call people by that name
(I imagine there are many, but knowing other names would be easier to find
them,if you would like.
The Archivo Nacional de la Nacin Argentina would be a very good place to
check, like Edmundo said. They do have info about Uruguayan documents. I'm
going to try them because some of my ancestors went to Arg. around 1850-80.
Their website is http://www.archivo.gov.ar and e-mail

Still in Argentina, C.E.M.L.A. (Centro de Estudios Migratorios
Latinoamericanos) has entries to Buenos Aires port 1882-1926. They do
searches by mail for $10.00 Address is
Centro for Estudios Migratorios Latinoamericanos (C.E.M.L.A.)
Avda. Independencia 20
(1099) Buenos Aires-Argentina
fax 4331-0832
e-mail
Where your grandparents went to when immigrating? I'm asking because there
are other places to search depending on the country; Uruguay or the United
States?
Jocelyn, if your people went to Buenos Aires, you can try C.E.M.L.A. I'm
checking Argentine censuses (in microfilm, from the LDS) so I'll keep an eye
peeled for any Mathias 1899-1901. Meanwhile, look up the mormon website
http://www.familysearch.org

Elena
