Peter:
I think we had a mail exchange last year in which I gave you information on
Helsby´s children in Buenos Aires. Regarding James, this data might help
you:
James Gooden Helsby born c.1794 in Liverpool, came to Buenos Aires august
1821 with his wife Sharon Stephens. He became one of the the most important
watch makers and opticians of the city. He had already been a watch maker in
England. The watches he sold in Buenos Aires had an inscription that said
"J. G. Helsby, Liverpool, N°...". In 1825 he was in charge of the
mantainance of the "Cabildo" clock. He died August 18, 1853. the british
Packet informed: “Deceased, who had attained his 58th year was a native of
Liverpool, but resided the principal part of his life in this city;
universally respected for his general intelligence, his mild and amiable
disposition, his active benevolence, and sincere unostentatious piety”.
I think you already have the information about his children born in Buenos
Aires. I shall only add that Thomas Columbus Helsby (1822-1879) is
considered one of the first daguerrotipists of the River Plate.
