Subject: From Dr. Godbey's Diaries - 2/2/1911

Hello Rooters,
Well, I have gotten several e-mails suggesting that the good doctor may have
meant to say "skedaddled" instead of "pedaddeled". I double checked the diary
and "pedaddeled" was definitely what was written. Now, as a youngster, I do
remember hearing both terms. I think they both mean the same thing, ie. "to
go in a hurry". Now lets see what is on the doctor's mind today.
From Dr. Godbey's Diaries
Thursday, February 2, 1911
Was called to John Vance's at 11 O'clock last night. Wife was delivered of a
girl at noon today. I stayed home this PM. This is groundhog day. He
certainly saw his shadow today. According to the old saying, there will be 6
weeks more of bad weather.
My comments:
I wonder if John Vance is from the Vance clan that lived in the Park City
area. And if the ledgend of the groundhog was an "old saying" in 1911, I
wonder when it originated. I suppose it may even be a piece of Native
American lore.
