Subject: GLOVER'S STATION - GREEN CO PART 2
Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 08:28:12 -0600
On 26 May 1809 William SKAGGS gave deposition as testimony in the case of
Charles ZACHARY vs Daniel BROWN, Alexander BROWN & Samuel FINLEY: Stated he
came to KY in spring of 1780, believes in the end of March, well acquainted
with Glover's Fort before or at the time of 12 May 1780, stated that the
fort which stood near whre the Joal (jail) in the town of Greensburg now
stands was a place well known to the generality of persons in that part of
the county in May 1780. Glovers Fort was more generally known in the Spring
of 1780 than any other settlement on Green River. (Note - the jail stood
where the present courthouse now stands).
William GLOVER stated in a deposition found in Deed Book 1, p 82 that he
and John HUDGENS lived at the place known by the name of Glover's Station
in 1780. His wife, Isabella GLOVER, was likely an occupant there. There is
no marriage record for them in Lincoln Co so they likely married before
they came to KY. They may have had children with them.
When Glover's Station was abandoned, William & Isabella returned to Lincoln
Co with the other settlers. He was apparently a son of John GLOVER who was
the administrator of the estate of John GLOVER, decd. who deeded to Wm 66
1/2 acres of land in Lincoln Co on Hawkins Creek Branch, bounded by the
lands of Joseph GLOVER and Alexander CARSON. This land appears to be a part
of a 200 acre tract deed to John GLOVER by Benjamin LOGAN and Ann his wife
20 July 1784.
On 20 Mar 1802, William GLOVER purchased 400 acres of land in Barren Co KY
on Fallen Timber Creek, a branch of Skaggs Creek. In 1805, William and
Isabella divested their interest of land they owned in Montgomery Co, , VA
- 108 acres on Back Creek, a branch of New River where William THOMPSON,
Sr. formerly lived. The latter was evidently her father.
William GLOVER died prior to the Aug term of the Barren Co Court, 1820. His
son, William, was appointed administrator of the estate. Isabella was still
living and waived her right of administration. The heirs of William are
found in a Barren Co deed 3 Feb 1821 - Michael DOUGHERTY and his wife Nancy
(late GLOVER), William, James, John, Betsy and Spicy GLOVER.
John HUDGENS was a resident of Glover's Station as shown by the deposition
of William GLOVER cited above. Also documented by Daniel HUDGENS taken in
the same case.
Daniel HUDGENS was sworn and stated that in the summer of 1780 he and John
HUDGENS started from Glover's Station and came across Mill Creek near the
mouth, up the river to John's Creek, up the same to a spring where Thomas
MARSHALL now lives and the place where they now stand. There was a beech
tree marked "BF" near the spring. He went into a cave and John HUDGENS then
informed him that this was the spring that he had entered for Boas FORDd.
This deposition was taken 1 June 1796.
