I believe "Mac" - "Mc" - "Mack" is usually a nickname over here, whereas in
Scotland, it--as someone else has already pointed out--indicates "son of" as
"ap" means in Welsh.

However, we've grown so fond of the sound of it, it is quite often used as a
given name also, with no nickname intended. Anyone here besides me old
enough to remember Johnny Mack BROWN?
