Delivery of the mails was really a bear - poor roads. The only roads in the
mid 1800's were the Glasgow-Bukesville Road (highway 90) which ran east and
west and the Horse Cave Road (also called the Trace Road and the
Randolph-Mt. Moriah Road) which ran north and south. The mail carrier, on
horseback, came down the Glasgow-Burkesville Road, making 2 round trips a
week. A stagecoach line began in the late 1880's, running between Glasgow
and Bukesville in Cumberland Co - a daily route. Smiths Crossroads were at
the half way point where horses could be exchanged. There was a stage coach
stop at Summer Shade. The first post office was in the general mercantile
store of Ezekiel WITTY and W M RIGGS. It was movd later to another small
building near to the former Frank McMURTREY garage; and then west on Hwy 90
next to where Rowlett's Key Stop Service Station is now. Then it was moved
again to a store on Hwy 640 which is known locally as the Lanon ISENBERG
General Store (SHAW's Auction Store). The first rural delivery became in
1913 with Martin C WORD as the mail carrier.

The first church in Summer Shade was reported to be Glover's Creek
Primitive Baptist Church which was located on the current PITCOCK farm
about 1.3 miles NW of Summer Shade. The church was constituted in 1802.

Photographs from 1910-20 time frame, around the square - left side of Main
Street show John BOWLES General Store (formerly owned by WITTY above), the
Bank of Summer SHade, and a general store originally known as HARVEY, WHITE
& TOOMEY. There was a furniture store/cabinet shop which also served as the
location for funeral supplies for the local undertaker, Clayton WHITE.
Herman McMURTREY later bcame the funeral director.

There was a general store also belonging to A B MAYFIELD, and one owned by
A C CARY (later owned by Ed PEDIGO and Lanos ISENERG. The SUmmer Shade
Christian Church was built in 1881.

Looking east on Main Street was Moody MORRISON's General Store and the
Summer Shade Baptist Church.

Other people in Summer Shade included Terry NORMAN, Dr Perry W BUSHONG,
George Robert CLARK (a fine black carpenter who built many of the older
homes in town and was tremendously respected), Dick BARTON (mail carrier),
Frank McMURTY, M L BALDOCK, Jim SHIRLEY (blacksmith), Jim TOOMEY, James
SHIRLEY and James WITTY ran a roller mill and Sam PEDIGO and JOEY BARTLEY
worked there 1901-1926 time frame. It burned in the late 1970's. The Summer
Shade Methodist Church was built in 1870.
