I'll close out my scary stories for Halloween with the following:

Somewhere in Warren County; a house that was supposed to be haunted, a new
family moving in. A father, a mother, a son and a daughter. Despite all the
warnings, nothing happened in that haunted house for a long time.

Until, one midnight, exactly to the minute, the telephone rang. The father
yelled out to the son to go answer the phone. They heard the son's
footsteps go downstairs - then total silence - then an awful scream. The
family ran downstairs to find their son dead on the floor, clutching the
telephone.

The family grieves, no suspect is found and they attempt to go on with
their life. Nothing unusual happens - until - one year later - at midnight
- to the exact minute - the phone rings. The father yells out to his
daughter to go answer the phone. They heard the daughter's footsteps go
downstairs - then total silence - then an awful scream. The parents ran
downstairs to find their daughter, dead on the floor, clutching the telephone.

The family grieves, no suspect is found and the parents attempt to go on
with their life. Nothing unusual happens - until - one year later - at
midnight - to the exact minute - the phone rings! The father nudges his
wife and orders her to go answer the phone. He heard his wife's footsteps
go downstairs - then total silence - then an awful scream. He runs
downstairs to find his wife, dead on the floor, clutching the telephone.

The husband grieves, no suspect is found and he attempts to go on with his
life. Nothing unusual happens - until - one year later - at midnight - to
the exact minute - the phone rings! The father jumps out of bed and runs
downstairs, determined to finally find who had done these dastardly deeds.
As he reaches the bottom step, he sees, in the corner, in the dark shadows,
something. He strains to see what it is, quivering in fear. Suddenly that
fearful thing in the corner starts moving closer and closer - until - in
the moonlight coming in through the living room window - he sees what it
is. It is a coffin, on end, lid open, inching slowly towards him.

He feels himself shaking in fear when he realizes that he has brought
nothing with him to defend himself. No gun, no baseball bat, nothing! And
the coffin inches closer and closer. Suddenly, he knew what he had to do!

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the first thing his shaking
fingers can find - a little coughdrop! He pops it into his mouth and, and,
and

That stops that dreaded coffin'.
