I won't be posting anything to the list tomorrow and would like to wish you
a glorious and safe Independence Day!
Thanks to those of you who are posting to the Barren Co boards yourself ...
I have noted new posts on deeds, etc. and this is what the boards are for!
Keep at it. If you have a copy of a deed from Barren Co that you'd be
willing to type up, a marriage announcement, an obituary, researchers will
forever and a day thank you!
The puzzler for this week is a little different. We all use expressions
daily of which we have no idea of the origin. Kentuckians have their own
set of expressions as does most sections of the country. The following
expression has been around for a long time "as easy as rolling off a log."
Of course we know that simply means something is very simple. And we know
that there were log rolling contests among the early settlers and that it
is very easy to fall or roll off a log. But according to tradition, there
was another meaning known to the early settler of America for this term. So
think of the early pioneer coming into Kentucky (or any state), the work he
had to do to establish a homestead and then tell me what was as easy as
rolling off a log!
Send me your guesses privately, I'll post the answer next week and I'll
wager (tho not a betting woman) that less than 2-3 of you will get it
(unless you have sources in your library or on the computer I don't know
about!).
See you officially Monday - Sandi
