1. I believe rarely, they would have been considered an unnecessary
expense.

2. My grandmothers, one born 1883 in Illinois and the other 1886 in
Arkansas, would have only ridden sidesaddle when young. By the 1920s, one
was riding straddle. I can recall both saying it wouldn't have been
considered proper to ride "astraddle" when they were young and their fathers
would not allow such a thing. Both grandmothers were born into poor farm
families. We still have one grandmother's sidesaddle.
