Subject: Help With A Spanish Immigrant To California

I am new to the list, and I am looking for the following:

Juan Bouett arrived in California, USA, in about 1830, when it was still
a part of México. When he married Maria Loreta Cota (a native
Californiana) in Los Angeles in 1847, his marriage record said:
"Resident of France; parents Augustín Antonio de Bouett and Maria
Cota." There has always been a family story that Juan Bouett was from
"the Basque country" or the area around Barcelona.

Can anyone suggest how I might begin to solve this puzzle?
