Hello fellow Rooters,
I would appreciate any help you can share with me, including suggestions
on how to proceed, resources I may not be aware of, or names & addresses
of places in Spain to write to. *Anything* including words of
encouragement are appreciated! Here's what I know (or think I know :)
Valentin Hevia (Hebia) Gonzalez.
b. August 14, 1862 in Gijon, Province of Asturias, Spain.
d. July 19, 1936 in Tampa, Florida.
Occupation: cigarmaker
Valentin left Asturias when he was about 14 years old, perhaps with a
brother.
They went to Cuba to learn the trade of cigarmaking
Valentin left Cuba in 1885 and went to New York (route unknown - no
information on his brother, if he existed at all)
Valentin married Clotilde Rumbo (mother's maiden name unknown)in New
York, 1890
They lived in Brooklyn and had 5 children there.
1900 moved to Tampa, Florida had 4 more children, one died in infancy.
Valentin's parents may have been farmers. When he received $24.00
inheritance from the sale of farm land after the death of his parents,
he returned it to his siblings in Spain explaining that he had not
worked the farm with them and therefore had not earned this
inheritance. He felt it should be divided among those who had lived and
worked the farm since their birth.
Thank you for reading this and for any suggestions or information you
may share.
Marti :)
